Fulltime • Zierikzee

MSC Thesis & Research assignments at Nemag B.V.

Do you want to experience an Engineering department at a leading manufacturer and contribute to the largest and fastest grabs in the world?

Job description

Grabs are used for unloading dry bulk cargo vessels such as iron ore or coal. The request for higher payloads, shorter cycletimes and longer lifetime results in a permanent desire of a more efficient grab.

Development of grabs and other types of bulk handling equipment is still a complicated process: predicting the performance of a new design is hard, as continuous models are not very suitable due to the particulate nature of the dry bulk material. The current design process of bulk handling equipment such as grabs is based on years of experience and consists of designing a prototype, building it in the factory and evaluating it at a test site. This is an expensive process involving high risks and long R&D times. Virtual prototyping is proven to be successful in predicting the performance of bulk handling equipment such as grabs and an efficient method to improve grab designs.

A validated model using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Multibody Dynamics (MBD) has been developed at TU Delft and is ready to be used for predicting the performance of a virtual prototype grab. This combined model computes the behavior of the individual particles as well as the behavior of the grab. With this tool, the performance of virtual prototypes can be compared, indicating whether a design change is an improvement or not. As many variables can influence the performance of a grab, finding an optimal performance is a challenging task.

What you'll do

Currently there are multiple MSc thesis and Research assignments available within this project. Ranging from DEM supported optimization of grab designs to development of completely new grab concepts.

The research will be carried out together with the TU Delft, 3ME, section Multi Machine Engineering. During this project the supervisory team exists of dr.ir. Dingena Schott (section Multi Machine Engineering) as well as the Engineering team at Nemag B.V..

The office location of the student is open for discussion (Delft and/or Zierikzee). A monthly allowance and travel expenses will be offered.

Working together

What we offer

At Nemag you turn ideas into steel that ships worldwide while working with a tight, hands-on team, solid tools, and a culture that invests in your growth. Expect real impact, room to develop, and a fair package that respects your time.

Impact you can see

At Nemag your work goes from CAD to quay fast. The grabs you design are built in our modern Zierikzee facility and shipped to terminals worldwide, saving real minutes per hatch and real demurrage for real customers. You’ll see your ideas tested on the shop floor, validated on the water, and celebrated by the team that made it happen.

Craft meets high tech

You’ll work with a tight, multidisciplinary crew (R&D, production, service), where decisions are short-line and hands-on. Expect solid tools (3D CAD, FEA), clean drawings, qualified weld procedures and a production floor that takes pride in quality. We iterate together: from first sketch, to prototype fit-up, to proof-load and delivery.

Grow your skills and your role

We invest in learning. Think training budget, materials courses (e.g., wear steels), and inspection/welding qualifications. Senior engineers mentor you; you’ll own projects end-to-end and can grow into specialist or lead tracks at a pace that suits you.

A fair package and balance

You can expect a competitive salary with profit-sharing, pension, and generous time off (27 vacation days plus additional “port days”). For non-shop-floor work we offer hybrid flexibility, and we provide the gear you need to do your best work. We value people: a friendly, safe workplace, respect for your time, and overtime handled transparently.

The application procedure

Send us your resume, possibly supplemented with a short explanation or portfolio. After receipt, you will automatically receive a confirmation. Within 2 to 5 working days, we will let you know what the next steps are.

Introductory meeting

An initial meeting with one or two Nemag colleagues to get acquainted. We will discuss the role, your experience and expectations, and provide insight into how we work.

Second interview

In a follow-up interview, you will discuss your knowledge, experience, and potential collaboration in more detail. Depending on the position, this interview may take place with other colleagues.

Proposal for terms of employment

If there is a good match, you will receive a clear proposal with the terms of employment, start date, and next steps for onboarding.

Welcome at Nemag!
